We invite you to the Caring for the Other Half PhotoVoice Exhibition on 28 May 2026, hosted at UWC’s School of Public Health.
This exhibition forms part of the Matariki Network-funded Caring for the other half project, which explores how the governance of publicly provided sanitation in urban informal settlements shapes women’s experiences of menstrual health.
This project has worked with women in Khayelitsha to understand how sanitation systems, social dynamics, and everyday practices shape their ability to manage menstruation with dignity, safety, and privacy. Using PhotoVoice, a participatory method that uses photography to document lived experiences, women from BM Section captured images reflecting the challenges and strategies of managing menstruation in contexts with limited sanitation infrastructure.
Held on World Menstrual Hygiene Day (28 May), this exhibition centres participants’ voices as they share their photographs and personal stories. It creates a space for government officials, academics, and other stakeholders to engage directly with these experiences and contribute to discussions on more inclusive and responsive sanitation governance.
