Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity: Gendered Energy Justice and WEF Coping Strategies

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our new project, Governing the Water–Energy–Food Nexus for Just Energy Transitions in Peri-Urban Africa, through the Africa Climate Collaborative’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme at the University of Cape Town.

The fellowship project will focus on Gendered energy justice and household water–energy–food coping strategies in peri-urban Emfuleni and Bushbuckridge. It will explore how households and informal actors navigate interconnected water, energy and food insecurity, and what these experiences reveal about gendered dimensions of energy justice.

We particularly welcome applicants with a PhD in a relevant social science discipline, including development studies, sociology, gender studies or human geography. Strong qualitative research skills and knowledge of gender equality concepts and frameworks are particularly relevant; survey and NVivo/SPSS experience would be beneficial.

The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Jiska de Groot (ACDI, UCT) and co-supervised by Britta Rennkamp and Christina Culwick Fatti.

The fellowship is for three years, with a tax-free stipend of R380,000 per year, and is open to citizens of African countries who meet the programme eligibility requirements.

Applications close: 29 October 2026 at 23:00 SAST.

Full details, eligibility requirements and application instructions are available through the Africa Climate Collaborative call.
